"Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails" Proverbs 19:21.

Christian budgeting and living is a fairly simple matter, although it is one of the more difficult challenges that many people face in their lives. The Bible helps us to understand God's gifts and gives us the ability to live happily with what He has given. Unfortunately, many people get into financial trouble because they (1) don't follow Biblical principles and (2)don't follow the rules of common sense. This simple guide is intended to help you do both.

The illustration to the right shows a simple plan that will help you to live as well as possible within your means and live better than most people who make as much as you do -- especially if you start early in life. Christian budgeting revolves around three principles people should understand:

  1. God has provided all that you need for this body and life. He will continue to help and sustain you. You can and should live within your means. Live on 80% (or less) of your after tax income. "Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that." (1Timothy 6:7-8).

  2. The Lord has chosen you to be a gift to those in need. The people of God should always seek to be known for their love, kindness and generosity. You are part of the Lord's "circle of giving". Live a life of charity. "A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor" (Proverbs 22:9). Give 10% of your after tax income.

  3. The Lord tells us that wealth is best accumulated over time and in thankful preparation for future needs and the needs of others, "In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has" (Proverbs 21:20). Save 10% of your after tax income.

We make no claim that the percentages represented here are absolute commandments, they are simply good Christian common sense based on the teachings in God's word.
