Physical strength is measured by what one can carry; spiritual by what one can bear. No amount of riches can atone for poverty of character. It is more necessary for us that we should make a discovery of our faults than of our virtues. Many "accept" the Christ of the cross, but reject the cross of Christ. Don't pray for light burdens but for stronger backs. Lord, help us to stand up for something lest we fall for anything. God provides no loaves for the loafers. It is not the ship in the water but the water in the ship that sinks it. It is not the Christian in the world but the world in the Christian that destroys him. The garments of His righteousness are never out of style. Holy Week is the one-week of the year that ought to be given Wholly to the Savior. What you are is God's gift to you. What you make of yourself is your gift to God. The Church Year is like a wagon heavily laden with the riches of God's blessings and grace. (4-26-1949) Ascension is a "Week of Expectation" that bridges the period between Easter and Pentecost and helps the faithful to recognize that Pentecost is the brilliant and majestic closing of the Easter Season. (5-31-1949) Ritual becomes meaningless only if people fail to understand it, fail to participate in it, fail to live it. Its sole aim is to lead people to salvation, by faith in Christ, the Sacrifice offered for us. (6-28-1949)
